Estudo exploratório sobre o impacto da diabetes na função cognitiva e no bem-estar mental

Sinopse

Este estudo explora a complexa relação entre a neuropsicologia e a diabetes, aprofundando os diferentes impactos da diabetes na função cognitiva e no bem-estar mental. Com a diabetes a emergir como um desafio de saúde global, consideramos muito importante compreender as suas ramificações para além da saúde física. Neste estudo, procuramos compreender o funcionamento cognitivo em indivíduos com diabetes, em especial o declínio cognitivo relacionado com a diabetes e as potenciais repercussões psicológicas. Analisamos ainda os efeitos agudos da hipoglicemia e o impacto crónico da hiperglicemia na saúde cognitiva. Explorando a hipótese da diabetes ‘tipo 3’, este breve estudo aborda as ligações entre a resistência à insulina no cérebro e o défice cognitivo. As complicações vasculares, microvasculares e macrovasculares, são observadas como fatores que contribuem para as alterações cognitivas associadas à diabetes. O trabalho também considera os aspectos comportamentais da gestão da diabetes, salientando o papel da educação do doente, da autogestão e das modificações do estilo de vida no apoio à saúde cognitiva. Além disso, exploramos, ainda que de forma breve, a relevância das avaliações neuropsicológicas na compreensão do quadro cognitivo dos indivíduos com diabetes. Entendemos que o trabalho pode contribuir para uma compreensão multidimensional das funções cognitivas e psicológicas dos cuidados com a diabetes, salientando o papel das abordagens integradas para a otimização do bem-estar geral dos pacientes.
